Sautéed Cabbage and Kielbasa
Description
Sautéed Cabbage and Kielbasa begins by browning smoked kielbasa slices in olive oil until crispy, unlocking their smoky flavor. The sausage is removed, and onions and butter are cooked until softened. Thinly sliced cabbage is then cooked uncovered until tender but still with some bite, during which the onions lightly brown and intensify flavor.
Garlic and paprika are stirred in to add warmth and subtle spice, followed by returning the kielbasa to warm through. The balance of tender cabbage and rich sausage makes this a satisfying dish with a mix of textures and tastes.
Perfect as a standalone meal or served alongside potatoes or crusty bread, this dish showcases simple ingredients combined with a classic sauté technique. It makes use of common smoked sausage and everyday vegetables to create a filling dinner. Adjust seasoning as needed with salt and black pepper for personal preference.
Ingredients
- 16 ounces kielbasa sliced into 1/4" rounds, smoked Polish sausage
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 onion chopped, medium
- 1 green cabbage sliced thin, core removed, medium
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. Add the sausage and cook, stirring occasionally, until it's nicely browned (7-10 minutes). Turn the heat down to medium once it gets going. Remove the kielbasa from the pan and set aside once it's nice and crisp.
- Add the butter and onion to the pan. Cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the cabbage to the pan and cook uncovered for 10-15 minutes, stirring fairly often. The cabbage at the bottom of the pan will start to wilt after a few minutes and it will become easier to stir. The onions will also start to lightly brown and become more flavorful.
- Once the cabbage is tender-crisp and cooked to your liking, add the garlic and paprika. Stir until it's combined. Add in the sausage and cook for a couple more minutes until it's heated through. Season with salt & pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Smoked Ukrainian or Hungarian sausage are suitable alternatives to kielbasa.
- Use a medium-sized cabbage around 2 pounds; discard outer leaves and core before slicing.
- The cabbage size doesn’t need to be exact; just slice thinly for even cooking.
