Scotch Eggs ~ Deep-Fried, Sausage-Covered Hard Boiled Eggs
Description
In this recipe, peeled hard-boiled eggs are encased in pound of sausage meat and shaped into rounds. Each egg is then dredged in flour, dipped in beaten egg, and coated with breadcrumbs to provide a crispy crust once cooked. Heating oil to about 350°F ensures the Scotch eggs cook until the sausage is fully done and the coating turns golden brown.
Besides deep frying, the recipe includes air fryer instructions, recommending a 375°F temperature with olive oil spray, cooking for about 6 minutes per side until cooked and browned. After frying, the eggs are drained on paper towels to remove excess oil. They can be served hot or cold depending on preference.
The sausage meat can be pork, beef, turkey, or a blend, offering versatility. This makes Scotch eggs a portable and filling finger food or appetizer option.
Ingredients
- 1 lb sausage meat (made using beef or pork for the sausage roll recipe below)
- 6 egg or soft-boiled, peeled, hard-boiled
- ½ cup flour
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 1 cup breadcrumbs (or more)
- olive oil enough to deep fry the Scotch eggs, light
Instructions
- Follow the recipe for: Sausage meat
- Shape sausage meat into flat round shapes to wrap around each egg.
- Heat oil in a pan or wok, so the eggs can be deep fried.
- Dip each sausage-wrapped egg in flour, then beaten egg and breadcrumbs.
- When oil is hot (about 350℉/ 175℃), fry each Scotch egg until golden brown, making sure to cook them long enough so that the sausage meat is fully cooked. Edited to add, these can be cooked in an air fryer, too. Spray them well with olive oil and put in the air fryer at 375℉/ 175℃ for about 6 minutes, turn and continue cooking for another 6 or 7 minutes, or until golden brown and the sausage is completely cooked.
- Remove and drain on paper towel. Serve hot or cold.
Notes
- Use freshly prepared or good-quality sausage meat for the best flavor and binding.
- Ensure eggs are peeled carefully to maintain smooth coverage by the sausage layer.
- Maintain oil temperature at 350°F when deep frying to cook through without burning exterior.
- Air fryer method is a lighter alternative; spray eggs well with oil and turn halfway through cooking.
- Drain cooked Scotch eggs on paper towels to reduce excess grease before serving.
