Seriously, The Best Healthy Turkey Chili

This healthy turkey chili blends ground turkey, onions, garlic, red bell pepper, kidney beans, and corn, simmered with mild chili powder and spices. The slow simmer produces a thick, flavorful chili balanced with warming cumin and oregano. It serves six generously and accommodates milder spice preferences by using a gentle chili powder.

Description

Seriously, The Best Healthy Turkey Chili combines sautéed aromatics like onion, garlic, and red bell pepper with ground lean turkey seasoned using mild chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne, and salt. Canned diced tomatoes, chicken broth, kidney beans, and corn are added and simmered to thicken the chili and develop its flavors over 30-45 minutes. The use of mild chili powder ensures the heat level remains manageable.

The texture is hearty with tender meat, softened veggies, and beans providing substance. The chili’s flavor leans on the gentle warmth from spices and the earthiness of beans and corn. This recipe yields about six servings, making it suitable for family meals or gatherings.

It can also be adapted for the slow cooker by browning the meat and onions first, then cooking on low or high settings with less broth. This chili fits well in casual settings like tailgates or football parties, and toppings like cheese, avocado, tortilla chips, cilantro, and sour cream can complement its taste.

Adjust chili powder quantities depending on your brand and heat preference to ensure the chili isn't too spicy.

  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt plus more to taste
  • 1 diced tomatoes or crushed tomatoes, canned, 28-ounce can

  • 1 sweet corn canned, rinsed and drained, 15 oz can
  • cheese for topping

Instructions

  1. Place oil in a large pot and place over medium high heat. Add in onion, garlic and red pepper and saute for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently.
  2. Add in ground turkey and break up the meat; cooking until no longer pink. Next add in chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne pepper and salt; stir for about 20 seconds.

  4. Garnish with anything you'd like. Makes 6 servings, about 1 1/2 cups each.

Notes

  • Use mild chili powder like McCormick’s to control heat; reduce chili powder if using other brands.
  • For slow cooker version, brown turkey and onions first, reduce broth to 1/2 cup, cook on high 3-4 hours or low 6-7 hours.
  • Serves about 6 servings of 1 1/2 cups each, suitable for parties or casual meals.
