Sesame Beef Stir Fry
Description
This Sesame Beef Stir Fry begins with marinating flank steak slices in a mixture of garlic, fresh ginger, reduced sodium soy sauce, rice vinegar, and Chinese five-spice powder. The marinade imparts aromatic depth and tenderizes the beef. Cooking the steak quickly in batches prevents overcrowding and encourages even browning.
Vegetables such as snow peas, carrots, and green onions are stir-fried until just tender crisp, preserving their texture and freshness. A sauce combining beef broth, soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey or brown sugar, and seasonings is whisked with cornstarch to create a shimmering glaze that coats the ingredients. Red pepper flakes add a subtle kick of spice.
The dish is finished by returning the beef to the pan with the sauce, integrating all components into a cohesive stir fry. It can be served alone or tossed with cooked ramen noodles for a more filling meal. The contrast of tender, well-seasoned beef and crisp vegetables, along with the balanced savory-sweet-spicy sauce, defines this recipe.
Particular tips include slicing the flank steak thinly while partially frozen, which helps achieve uniform slices with minimal effort.
Ingredients
BEEF MARINADE
- 2 teaspoon garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger grated, fresh
- 2 tablespoon soy sauce reduced sodium
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- ½ teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
STIR FRY
- 1 lb flank steak thinly sliced
- 1 cup snow peas sliced in half across
- ½ cup carrot sliced
- 8 green onions sliced
- ¼ cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoon soy sauce reduced sodium
- 1-2 tablespoon honey or light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- ½ tablespoon garlic minced
- 2 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon ginger grated, fresh
- 1 teaspoon cornstarch
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 tablespoon vegetable oil for cooking
Instructions
- Combine marinade ingredients in bowl and add flank steak. Set aside 15 minutes.
- Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in large skillet over MED HIGH heat. Remove excess marinade from steak and cook in a single layer, for 2-3 minutes, stirring to cook both sides. Depending on the size of your pan, you may need to do this in batches. Remove steak to plate.
- Heat remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, then add peas, carrots and green onion and cook stirring often, 2-3 minutes.
- Whisk together broth, soy sauce, honey/brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, sesame oil, fresh ginger, cornstarch, and red pepper flakes. Add steak and sauce to skillet, stirring to combine. Sauce will thicken.
- Stir in cooked ramen noodles if using, and serve!
Notes
- Slice flank steak partially frozen to obtain thin, even slices easily.
- Cook steak in batches to avoid overcrowding and ensure proper searing.
