Sesame Broccoli Stir Fry
Description
To make Sesame Broccoli Stir Fry, broccoli is cut into florets and peeled stems for even cooking. The broccoli is briefly sautéed in vegetable oil and steamed with a splash of water to achieve a bright green color and slightly crisp texture. Minced garlic and fresh ginger add aromatic depth when cooked just until fragrant.
A sauce of soy sauce, water, toasted sesame oil, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes is added and cooked until warmed through, coating the broccoli evenly. Toasted sesame seeds sprinkled on top add texture and a toasty flavor. The stir fry balances savory, slightly sweet, and mildly spicy notes in a quick vegetable-focused dish.
This dish pairs well with rice or noodles and can be adjusted to taste by omitting or substituting the chili flakes. To toast sesame seeds, use a dry pan over medium heat, stirring until golden and fragrant promptly to avoid burning.
Ingredients
- 1 bunch broccoli about 1 pound
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon ginger fresh, minced
- sesame seeds for garnish, optional, toasted
Sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil toasted
- ½ teaspoon brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Cut broccoli into florets. Peel the tough outer layer from the broccoli stem and cut broccoli into 1" pieces.
- Combine sauce ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.
- Heat the oil in a pan over medium high heat and add broccoli. Cook 2 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons water or broth to the pan and cook an additional 2 minutes or until water evaporates.

Notes
- Cook broccoli until bright green and still slightly crisp to preserve flavor and nutrients.
- Toast sesame seeds in a dry pan over medium heat until golden and fragrant for best flavor.
- Adjust or omit red pepper flakes according to desired spice level; alternatives like sriracha or sambal can be used.
