Sesame Garlic Beef Stir Fry
Description
The recipe marinates thinly sliced flank steak in a blend of soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, garlic, five-spice powder, and sesame seeds. This imparts deep savory and aromatic layers to the beef. Cooking the steak over medium-high heat in batches ensures a seared exterior and juicy interior.
Quickly stir-frying snow peas, shredded carrot, and sliced green onions adds fresh vegetable crunch and sweetness. A sauce mixture of beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, sesame oil, ginger, cornstarch, and red pepper flakes is added to thicken and flavor the dish. Returning the cooked beef to the pan lets the meat absorb the sauce.
The finished stir fry showcases a balance of tender meat and crisp vegetables with a rich, mildly sweet, and slightly spicy sauce. Adding cooked ramen noodles is optional, pairing well to create a fuller meal.
Ingredients
Beef Marinade
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce reduced sodium
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp fresh ginger grated
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 tsp garlic minced
- 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
Stir Fry
- 1 lb. flank steak thinly sliced across the grain
- 1 cup snow peas sliced in half
- 1/2 cup carrot shredded
- 8 green onion sliced
- 1/4 cup beef broth
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce reduced sodium
- 2 Tbsp light brown sugar
- 1 Tbsp rice vinegar
- 1/2 Tbsp garlic minced
- 2 tsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp fresh ginger grated
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes
- 2 Tbsp vegetable oil divided, for cooking
Instructions
- Combine marinade ingredients in a bowl and add flank steak. Turn to coat and set aside for 15 minutes.
- Heat 1 Tbsp vegetable oil in a large skillet over MED HIGH heat. Remove excess marinade from steak and cook in a single layer for 2-3 minutes, stirring to cook both sides. Depending on the size of your pan, you might need to cook the beef in batches. Remove steak to plate.
- Heat remaining 1 Tbsp vegetable oil in skillet, then add peas, carrots and green onion and cook, stirring often, for 2-3 minutes.
- Whisk together broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, garlic, sesame oil, fresh ginger, cornstarch and red pepper flakes. Add steak and sauce to skillet, stirring to combine. Sauce will thicken.
- Stir in cooked ramen noodles, if using, and serve!
