Shrimp and Broccoli Alfredo

Shrimp and Broccoli Alfredo features sautéed shrimp and tender broccoli florets combined with pasta shells and a creamy Alfredo sauce made from butter, garlic, flour, milk, and Parmesan cheese. This dish offers a rich, cheesy flavor balanced with the freshness of broccoli and a tender bite of shrimp, served over tender pasta for a hearty meal.

Description

Shrimp and Broccoli Alfredo blends sautéed shrimp cooked until opaque with broccoli steamed in the same pan until fork-tender. The sauce is created in the skillet by melting butter and infusing it with minced garlic, then incorporating flour to make a roux. Gradually adding milk forms a smooth base that is thickened as Parmesan cheese melts in, seasoned with salt and pepper. This cheese sauce envelops the cooked pasta shells, shrimp, and broccoli to create a harmonious, creamy dish.

The resulting combination offers a balanced texture contrast: the tender shrimp and broccoli add freshness and bite, while the warm, creamy sauce creates a rich flavor and smooth texture coating the pasta. The garlic and Parmesan provide a savory depth typical of Alfredo sauces, without overwhelming delicate shrimp.

Serve the dish immediately topped with extra grated Parmesan. It works well as a filling dinner on its own, with the shrimp adding protein and broccoli providing vegetables in one skillet preparation. For a richer sauce, substituting some milk with heavy cream or half and half enhances creaminess.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound Shrimp peeled and deveined, tails removed if desired, medium or large size
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cups broccoli florets
  • ¼ cup water
  • 8 ounces pasta shells boiled until tender and drained, medium
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 3 cups whole milk for a richer sauce, sub one cup of heavy cream, or half and half
  • cup Parmesan Cheese shredded
  • 1-2 teaspoons salt to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper or ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, cracked
  • Parmesan Cheese additional grated, for topping

Instructions

  1. Drizzle oil in a large (2-inch deep) skillet over medium heat. Add shrimp and saute for 4-6 minutes until opaque and cooked through. Transfer to a dish and cover to keep warm.
  2. Add broccoli and water to the pan, cover and cook 4-6 minutes until broccoli is fork-tender. Drain any remaining liquid and set broccoli aside with the shrimp.
  3. Add butter to the pan (still over medium heat). Once melted, stir in garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute.
  4. Sprinkle flour over melted butter and stir to combine.
  5. Gradually whisk in milk until incorporated and smooth.
  6. Stir in cheese, salt, and pepper until cheese is completely melted and incorporated. Taste, add more salt and pepper if needed.
  7. Stir in cooked pasta shells, shrimp, and broccoli. Top with additional parmesan cheese and serve.

Notes

  • Replace part of the milk with heavy cream for a richer, creamier Alfredo sauce.
