Shrimp and Broccoli Alfredo
Description
Shrimp and Broccoli Alfredo blends sautéed shrimp cooked until opaque with broccoli steamed in the same pan until fork-tender. The sauce is created in the skillet by melting butter and infusing it with minced garlic, then incorporating flour to make a roux. Gradually adding milk forms a smooth base that is thickened as Parmesan cheese melts in, seasoned with salt and pepper. This cheese sauce envelops the cooked pasta shells, shrimp, and broccoli to create a harmonious, creamy dish.
The resulting combination offers a balanced texture contrast: the tender shrimp and broccoli add freshness and bite, while the warm, creamy sauce creates a rich flavor and smooth texture coating the pasta. The garlic and Parmesan provide a savory depth typical of Alfredo sauces, without overwhelming delicate shrimp.
Serve the dish immediately topped with extra grated Parmesan. It works well as a filling dinner on its own, with the shrimp adding protein and broccoli providing vegetables in one skillet preparation. For a richer sauce, substituting some milk with heavy cream or half and half enhances creaminess.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Shrimp peeled and deveined, tails removed if desired, medium or large size
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 3 cups broccoli florets
- ¼ cup water
- 8 ounces pasta shells boiled until tender and drained, medium
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 3 cups whole milk for a richer sauce, sub one cup of heavy cream, or half and half
- ⅔ cup Parmesan Cheese shredded
- 1-2 teaspoons salt to taste
- ½ teaspoon black pepper or ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, cracked
- Parmesan Cheese additional grated, for topping
Instructions
- Drizzle oil in a large (2-inch deep) skillet over medium heat. Add shrimp and saute for 4-6 minutes until opaque and cooked through. Transfer to a dish and cover to keep warm.
- Add broccoli and water to the pan, cover and cook 4-6 minutes until broccoli is fork-tender. Drain any remaining liquid and set broccoli aside with the shrimp.
- Add butter to the pan (still over medium heat). Once melted, stir in garlic until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- Sprinkle flour over melted butter and stir to combine.
- Gradually whisk in milk until incorporated and smooth.
- Stir in cheese, salt, and pepper until cheese is completely melted and incorporated. Taste, add more salt and pepper if needed.
- Stir in cooked pasta shells, shrimp, and broccoli. Top with additional parmesan cheese and serve.
Notes
- Replace part of the milk with heavy cream for a richer, creamier Alfredo sauce.
