Shrimp Mozambique (Portuguese Spicy Shrimp)
Description
Shrimp Mozambique starts with sautéing finely diced onions and minced garlic in olive oil until softened and fragrant. Paprika and salt are then incorporated to build the base flavor, followed by the addition of pimenta moída or similar hot sauce to introduce a distinct Portuguese heat. The shrimp are added and cooked briefly until they begin turning pink.
White wine is poured in and allowed to simmer on low heat, reducing slightly to create a thicker, flavorful sauce that coats the shrimp. The balance of spices and heat can be adjusted to taste by adding more pimenta moída as needed. Freshly chopped parsley is stirred in just before serving, adding vibrant color and herbal brightness.
The dish is served with lemon wedges to squeeze over the shrimp, enhancing the spicy flavors with sharp acidity. Shrimp Mozambique offers a bold, spicy profile with a tender texture from the shrimp and a slightly thickened, aromatic sauce ideal for serving as an appetizer or main dish alongside rice or bread to soak up the flavorful sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 pound Shrimp (shell on and deveined, or peeled and deveined shrimp)
- 1 onion finely diced, small
- 6 garlic minced, cloves
- 1 cup white wine
- 2 tablespoon paprika
- 4 teaspoon black pepper Portuguese hot pepper paste, or hot sauce of choice, pimenta moída
- ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ¼ cup parsley chopped, fresh
- olive oil (for cooking)
- lemon for serving, wedges
Instructions
- In a large frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic until softened, approximately 1 minute.
- Add in salt and paprika and continue sautéing for 1 minute.
- Add in pimenta moida or hot sauce of choice and stir until fully combined.
- Add in the shrimp and sauté until they start to turn light pink.
- Pour in the wine and let simmer for 1 minute on low heat. The wine will evaporate slightly and create a thicker sauce.
- Season to taste with additional pimenta moida or hot sauce as desired. Pimenta moida already has salt added, so you want to taste the sauce before adding more salt.
- Stir in fresh chopped parsley. Serve with lemon wedges and enjoy!
