Simple Caprese Sandwich
Description
This sandwich is composed of sliced heirloom tomato and fresh mozzarella, preferably mozzarella di bufala, arranged on bread or a baguette roll. A sprinkle of sea salt enhances the tomato’s natural flavors while extra virgin olive oil adds a delicate richness. Torn basil leaves contribute a fresh, aromatic lift characteristic of Italian cuisine.
The sandwich relies on the balance of textures: the juicy tomato, the soft and creamy cheese, the crispness of fresh basil, and the bread’s firmness. No balsamic vinegar or glaze is used here, staying true to the traditional Caprese flavor profile.
Serving the sandwich slightly pressed helps meld the layers, and toothpicks can be used to hold sandwiches together when serving multiple people. This versatile sandwich works well as a light lunch or picnic item.
Ingredients
- 2 lices bread or a roll (baguette is very good-see pic at bottom)
- 1 tomato sliced, good quality like heirloom
- 2 oz fresh mozzarella slices, preferably mozzarella di bufala, if you can source it
- ¼ tsp salt a couple pinches, sea salt
- ½ tsp extra virgin olive oil
- 2 large basil fresh leaves
Instructions
- Arrange the tomato slices on the bottom bread slice and drizzle with a little extra virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with salt.
- Next, place the mozzarella slices on top of the tomatoes along with some torn pieces of basil leaves (or whole leaves) on top, and drizzle with a little more olive oil.
- Finally, place the other slice of bread on top and enjoy!
Notes
- Use a toothpick to keep the sandwich layers secured if preparing for multiple servings.
- Traditional Caprese sandwiches do not include balsamic vinegar or glaze, preserving classic flavors.
