Simple Sautéed Cabbage
Description
Simple Sautéed Cabbage involves thinly slicing a medium head of green cabbage and sautéing it with chopped onion in a mix of butter and olive oil. The cabbage softens over 10 to 15 minutes of cooking, with occasional stirring to prevent burning while encouraging slight browning that adds flavor. Smoked paprika and minced garlic finish cooking in the pan, infusing the cabbage with smoky and aromatic nuances. Salt and black pepper season the dish to taste.
The result is tender cabbage with some caramelized edges and a mild smoky undertone from the paprika. This side dish serves well alongside roasted, grilled, or pan-cooked main courses. Its simplicity allows the cabbage’s natural flavor to stand out.
For seasoning, sea salt works well, but the dish can also be adapted with seasoning salts or blends to vary the flavor. The recipe typically serves 4 to 6, making it practical for family meals.
Ingredients
- 1 medium green cabbage cored & sliced into thin strips, head
- 1 medium onion chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prep the cabbage and chop your onion. I just slice the cabbage thin (cut out the core) and chop the onion like usual.
- Add the butter and oil to a skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the onion for 3 minutes.
- Add the cabbage to the pan and toss/stir it as best as you can (use 2 spoons or tongs to make it easier). Don't worry, as it cooks the cabbage goes down and it becomes more manageable. Stir/toss it often and let it cook until it's just about as soft as you want it (about 10-15 minutes).
- Add in the paprika and garlic. Cook it for a couple more minutes. If the cabbage starts to brown too quickly, turn the heat down. Some browning is good - it adds extra flavor.
- Season with salt & pepper as needed and serve immediately.
Notes
- This recipe yields 4 to 6 servings as a side dish using a medium 2 lb cabbage.
- Sea salt is the usual choice, but you can substitute with seasoning salt or Tony's seasoning for more flavor variations.
