Skillet Fried Apples
Description
The Skillet Fried Apples recipe features Granny Smith apples, known for their tartness, sliced thick and cooked in butter. The apples soften during an 8-10 minute sauté with cinnamon, brown sugar, and granulated sugar, which both sweeten and create a caramel-like note. A pinch of salt enhances the flavors. A cornstarch-based slurry with water and lemon juice is stirred in to thicken the natural juices into a glaze that coats the apples. After thickening for a few minutes, the apples are removed from heat and slightly cooled.
The texture achieved is tender slices with a sticky, shiny sauce that blends tart, sweet, and buttery tastes. The lemon juice adds brightness that prevents the apples from tasting cloying or overly sweet. This preparation can be used as a comforting side or dessert topping.
The butter used is unsalted for controlled seasoning, and the apples can be peeled or left unpeeled according to preference. Lemon juice is added at the thickening stage to help maintain the fresh flavor and avoid discoloration. The cooked apples can be served warm directly from the skillet, which allows them to retain their softness and glazed coating.
Overall, this recipe focuses on simple, classic ingredients and a skillet method to balance sweetness and acidity while producing tender fried apples with a rich flavor and syrupy finish.
