Skillet Orange Chicken Recipe

Skillet Orange Chicken features bite-sized chicken breast pieces coated in cornstarch and quickly browned in oil, then cooked in a bright orange sauce made with marmalade, fresh orange juice, soy sauce, and ginger. The sauce thickens to a glaze over the chicken, balancing sweet, savory, and tangy flavors with minced garlic and a hint of heat from red pepper flakes. Served over rice, this dish offers a satisfying texture and a fresh citrus profile.

Description

The chicken is cut into cubes and coated with cornstarch, salt, and pepper to create a light crust when cooked. It browns quickly in a hot skillet with oil, ensuring a crispy exterior and tender interior. The orange sauce is prepared by whisking together marmalade, orange juice, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, red pepper flakes, chicken broth, and additional cornstarch to provide thickness. After browning, the chicken is simmered in the sauce until fully cooked and the sauce becomes glossy and thick enough to coat each piece. The mixture is served hot over rice to catch the glaze and complement the flavors.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 chicken breast cut into 1″ cubes, boneless skinless
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil or vegetable oil
  • ½ cup orange marmalade
  • ½ cup orange juice unsweetened
  • cup soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger fresh, minced
  • 1 pinch red pepper flakes
  • cup chicken broth reduced sodium
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Place chicken pieces in a large bowl and add 3 tablespoons corn starch, salt and pepper. Stir to coat.
  2. Heat a large pan over high heat and add oil (add more oil if needed to coat the bottom of your pan).
  3. Add chicken to the pan and cook over high heat, turning once, just until browned, about 2 minutes per side.
  4. Meanwhile, make the Orange Chicken sauce. Whisk together the marmalade, juice, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, pepper flakes, chicken broth and 2 tablespoons corn starch.
  5. Once chicken is browned, reduce heat to medium and add the sauce. Cook and stir until sauce has thickened and chicken is cooked through (165° F minimum), about 10 minutes.
  6. Serve over rice as desired.
