Skillet Shepherd's Pie

Skillet Shepherd's Pie combines a savory ground beef mixture with mixed vegetables and a creamy mashed potato topping. The beef is browned with onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and seasonings, then simmered with frozen vegetables and broth. Smooth mashed potatoes made with butter, milk, Parmesan, and seasoning are spread on top and baked until warmed through and lightly browned. This skillet method produces a hearty, comforting dish with layered flavors and textures.

Description

In this recipe, ground beef is cooked with olive oil, onions, garlic, red pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and an onion soup mix to create a flavorful meat base. Frozen mixed vegetables are folded in and cooked briefly to combine flavors. Potatoes are boiled until tender, mashed with butter, milk, Parmesan cheese, salt, and white pepper for a smooth topping.

The beef and vegetable mixture is spread in a skillet, topped with the mashed potatoes, then baked at 350°F. The result is a comforting blend of savory meat filling with a creamy, slightly cheesy mashed potato crust. The method optimizes flavor by cooking the filling and topping separately but assembling for a baked finish.

This dish is suitable as a main meal, often served hot. It offers a balanced mix of protein, vegetables, and starch. The mashed potato topping provides a creamy texture contrast to the robust meat and vegetable base. Parsley garnish adds freshness and color.

Using lean beef lets the recipe avoid excess fat, and the butter is cut into pieces for easier potato mashing. Frozen vegetables simplify preparation while maintaining nutrients. The onion soup mix adds seasoning depth but salt addition should be careful due to its sodium content.

Ingredients

Servings

For Meat Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • pound ground beef lean
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper or to taste
  • 1 large onion chopped
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1.9 ounce onion soup mix I used Knorr, 55g pkg
  • 1 cup beef broth low sodium
  • 2 cups mixed vegetables I used mix of peas, carrots, green beans and corn, frozen

For Mashed Potatoes

  • 6 large potato peeled and cut into cubes
  • 4 tablespoon butter softened
  • ½ cup milk
  • ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese
  • ½ teaspoon salt or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon white pepper or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon parsley fresh, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Boil the potatoes. Start by first cooking the potatoes in boiling water for about 15 minutes or until fork tender. While the potatoes are cooking, you can prepare the meat mixture.
  2. Prepare the meat mixture. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef to the skillet, season it with the salt and pepper and cook it for about 5 minutes or until it's no longer pink, breaking it up as you go along.
  3. Add Ingredients. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 3 more minutes until the onion softens and becomes translucent. Next, add the pepper flakes, Worcestershire sauce, onion soup mix, beef broth and stir. Stir in the frozen veggies and cook for a couple more minutes. Set aside.
  4. Preheat oven. Preheat the oven 350°F.
  5. Prepare the mashed potatoes. Drain the potatoes then add them to a large bowl. Add in the butter and using a potato masher, mash until smooth. Add the milk, Parmesan cheese, salt pepper and mash a bit a more until smooth.
  6. Finish assembling the shepherd's pie. Spread the potatoes over the meat and smooth it out with a spoon. Take a fork and rough up the top a bit.
  7. Bake. Place the skillet on a baking sheet, then transfer it to the oven and bake for 40 minutes until golden brown on top.
  8. Garnish and serve. Garnish with parsley and serve warm.

Notes

  • Be cautious with additional salt since the onion soup mix contains significant sodium.
  • Frozen mixed vegetables can be used to save prep time without sacrificing flavor.
  • Preparing homemade mashed potatoes ensures a creamier, more flavorful topping compared to store-bought.
  • Using the same skillet to brown beef and assemble the pie enhances flavor and reduces cleanup.
  • Use lean ground beef to avoid excess oil, and omit added oil if higher-fat beef is chosen.
  • Cut butter into pieces before mashing potatoes to facilitate smooth texture.
