Skillet S'mores Dip
Description
This recipe begins by preheating the oven with a 6.5-inch oven-safe skillet inside to get it hot. Butter is swirled to coat the pan, then chocolate chips are evenly spread at the bottom. Large marshmallows are arranged on top to fill the skillet, as they will expand while baking.
Baking at 400°F for 6-8 minutes softens the chocolate and creates a toasted, golden-brown marshmallow layer. Using the broiler briefly can darken the marshmallows further, providing a charred flavor resembling traditional campfire s'mores. Removing the skillet after baking and allowing it to sit a few minutes thickens the dip slightly for dipping.
This dip serves around eight people and can be accompanied by graham crackers, cookies, pretzels, or other dippers to scoop the warm, gooey layers. It’s a versatile dessert suitable for gatherings, offering familiar s'mores components in an easy-to-share format.
For those without an oven-safe skillet or preferring to avoid hot skillet handling, assembling the dip in an 8x8" baking dish is an alternative method. Melting butter and chocolate first, then topping with marshmallows before baking yields similar results.
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp butter unsalted
- 11 oz bag milk chocolate chips I love Guittard brand
- 10 oz bag marshmallows large
- graham crackers or other dippers (cookies, pretzels, etc)
Instructions
Prepare
- Preheat oven to 400°F. Place a 6.5" oven-safe skillet in the oven as it preheats, so it will be hot.
Assemble
- When oven is preheated, safely remove the skillet from the oven (use oven mitts, it will be HOT).
- Add unsalted butter and either swirl it around to coat the bottom/insides of the skillet, or use a rubber spatula.
- Add chocolate chips, spreading them into an even layer.
- Top with marshmallows, adding as many as you can fit in the skillet (they will expand a bit once heated).
Bake
- Use an oven mitt to transfer the skillet back to the oven, and bake for 6-8 minutes, or until the tops of the marshmallows are golden and toasted.
- If you'd like more of a dark golden brown/char on your marshmallows, you can turn on the broiler after baking (keep the oven rack in the middle position though), and broil it. Keep a close eye on it though, marshmallows will burn very easily!
Serve
- Remove skillet from oven and let sit for a few minutes before serving. This dip is extremely hot, and you don't want to burn your fingers trying to eat it!
- Serve with your favorite dippers (graham crackers, golden oreos, pretzels, teddy grahams, etc).
Notes
- If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, prepare this dip in an 8x8" baking dish by melting butter and chocolate first, then topping with marshmallows, and baking as directed.
- Preheating the skillet in the oven ensures even melting and toasting but requires careful handling with oven mitts as it will be very hot.
- The recipe serves approximately eight people, so adjust ingredient amounts and pan size accordingly to serve different group sizes.
- Using the broiler briefly after baking can deepen the marshmallows’ golden color and add a toasted flavor, but watch carefully to prevent burning.
