Sliced Heirloom Tomato Burrata Salad

This Sliced Heirloom Tomato Burrata Salad showcases large, thick tomato slices seasoned simply with sea salt and black pepper. A creamy sauce made from mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, garlic, and lemon juice is drizzled over the tomatoes, which are then topped with chunks of fresh burrata cheese, capers, and fresh basil. The salad offers fresh, tangy, and creamy elements combining clean vegetable flavors with rich cheese.

Description

The recipe begins by cutting heirloom or beefsteak tomatoes into thin slabs arranged on a serving platter. They are lightly seasoned with flaky sea salt and black pepper to enhance their sweetness and texture. Separately, a sauce is prepared by mixing mayonnaise and Dijon mustard with minced garlic and fresh lemon juice, adding tanginess and creamy balance.

The sauce is drizzled over the tomatoes, then the salad is assembled by placing torn pieces of burrata cheese on top along with capers and chopped fresh basil. Burrata’s creamy interior contrasts with the tomatoes’ freshness while capers add subtle briny notes. Basil contributes a herbal brightness.

This salad is best eaten immediately as the tomatoes tend to release moisture and soften over time. Using a serrated knife helps achieve clean, even slices without crushing the tomatoes. Burrata, a fresh Italian cheese with a creamy center similar to mozzarella and rich cream, complements the salad with mild milky flavor and soft texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 lbs tomato like beefsteak or heirloom, 1.4 kg, large
  • 1 pinch sea salt flaky
  • 1 pinch black pepper flaky
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise 50 g
  • 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice 15 mL
  • 2 Tbsp basil roughly chopped, fresh
  • 1 tsp capers
  • 1 or 2 balls burrata cheese

Instructions

  1. Slice: Slice tomatoes crosswise into thin slabs and arrange them on a serving platter. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  2. Sauce: Stir together ¼ cup mayonnaise, 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard, 3 cloves garlic (minced), and 1 Tbsp lemon juice.
  3. Assemble: Drizzle sauce over the tomatoes and top with 2 Tbsp fresh basil, 1 tsp capers, and 1 or 2 balls burrata cheese (torn into big chunks). Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Eat this salad soon after assembling because tomatoes release moisture and soften quickly.
  • Use a serrated knife to slice tomatoes cleanly without crushing them.
  • Burrata cheese is a fresh cheese with a soft, creamy interior that pairs well with ripe tomatoes and should be served raw.
