Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese
Description
This Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese starts with lean ground beef browned in a skillet to develop a deep crust, then cooked with sautéed onions, green bell pepper, garlic, yellow mustard, ketchup, brown sugar, kosher salt, and black pepper until thick and saucy. Meanwhile, white bread slices are buttered and layered with American cheese. Half of the bread slices are topped with the meat mixture before sandwiching with cheese-topped slices.
The sandwiches are cooked in a medium-high heat cast iron pan or griddle until the bread is crispy with golden brown edges and the American cheese melts into the warm meat filling. The combination offers a balance of textures with tender, flavorful beef, creamy cheese, and crispy bread.
This recipe is well suited for a satisfying lunch or casual dinner, offering a twist on classic sloppy joe flavors with the comfort of grilled cheese.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef lean
- 1 tablespoon butter unsalted
- 1/2 yellow onion , chopped
- 1/2 green bell pepper , chopped
- 1 clove garlic , minced
- 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper ground
- 12 lices American cheese
- 12 lices white bread
- 4 tablespoons butter unsalted
Instructions
- Add the ground beef to a large skillet (this browns very well) on high heat and brown until a deep brown crust appears before breaking the beef apart.
- Stir the ground beef and brown until a deep crust appears on about 50 or so percent of the beef, and it is cooked through, then remove the beef, drain the fat and add the butter, onions and bell pepper to the pan.
- Let brown for 1-2 minutes before stirring, then let brown for another 1-2 minutes before stirring again and add the beef back into the pan.
- Add the garlic, mustard, ketchup, brown sugar, salt, black pepper, to the pan and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated (about 75% of the mixture is above liquid), 3-5 minutes.
- Spread the butter on one side of each of the 12 slices of bread.
- Butter side down on the cutting board.
- Add a slice of American Cheese to each of the slices.
- Top six slices with the meat mixture and close the sandwiches pressing down lightly.
- In a cast iron pan or griddle on medium high add the sandwiches and cook for 3-5 minutes on each side.
