Sloppy Joes

Sloppy Joes combine ground beef cooked with onion, green bell pepper, and garlic, simmered in a tangy sauce made from tomato sauce, tomato paste, vinegar, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Served on toasted hamburger buns, this recipe creates a balanced dish of sweet, savory, and slightly spicy flavors, with tender meat and softened vegetables.

Description

This Sloppy Joes recipe starts by cooking ground beef with diced onions, garlic, and bell peppers until the vegetables are soft and the beef is fully cooked. The excess fat is drained, allowing the sauce to adhere better to the meat. The sauce blends tomato sauce and paste with acidic apple cider vinegar, rich brown sugar, and tangy Dijon mustard, accented with chili powder and Worcestershire sauce for complexity.

Simmering the mixture coats the meat with a thick, flavorful sauce that is both sweet and tangy. The sautéed vegetables add mild crunch and freshness, balancing the richness of the beef. Toasted hamburger buns provide a sturdy vehicle for the saucy filling, helping prevent sogginess.

This dish is a classic comfort food, suitable for casual lunches or dinners. It pairs well with simple sides like coleslaw or fries. Leftovers can be reheated gently and remain flavorful as a handheld meal.
