Slow Cooker Hoisin Chicken
Description
This Slow Cooker Hoisin Chicken recipe combines diced chicken breast with a sauce blend of hoisin, soy sauce, honey, sriracha, and garlic. Cooking in the slow cooker on low or high ensures tender meat infused with rich, sweet, salty, and mildly spicy flavors. The snap peas are stirred in during the last 15 minutes to retain their crisp texture and bright green color.
The sauce can be thickened either by boiling a portion separately before returning it or by adding a cornstarch slurry directly to the slow cooker and cooking uncovered. This results in a glossy coating that clings to the chicken pieces.
Serving the dish over a cooked grain such as rice or quinoa allows the flavorful sauce to be enjoyed fully. The recipe’s slow cooker format makes it suitable for unattended cooking and tender results.
Ingredients
- 1 lb chicken breast diced
- 6 cloves garlic
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 2 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp sriracha
- 227 grams snap peas
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- grain to serve, choice of grain
Instructions
- In a slow cooker, place in diced chicken breasts and crushed garlic cloves.
- In a small measuring cup, mix together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, and Sriracha sauce before pouring it on top of the chicken, fully covering the diced chicken.
- Set the slow cooker to high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours.
- In the last 15 minutes, open the slow cooker and mix in the snap peas.
To Thicken The Sauce (2 methods)
- Scoop out 1/3 to 1/2 of the sauce into a small sauce pan, bring it to a boil on the stove top for 3-5 minutes before adding it back to the slow cooker to coat the chicken.
- Make a cornstarch slurry (3 tbsp sauce in a bowl with 1 tbsp cornstarch, mix) and add it to your slow cooker then let the slow cooker cook on high for 15 minutes with the lid off (this allows moisture to evaporate and allows the sauce to thicken).
