Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak
Description
The Slow Cooker Salisbury Steak combines lean ground beef with onion soup mix, milk, and breadcrumbs to form tender patties. After browning the patties briefly in a skillet to develop flavor and texture, they are placed over diced onions and sliced mushrooms in a slow cooker. A sauce made from condensed cream of mushroom soup, dry au jus gravy mix, and water is poured over the patties, creating a savory and hearty gravy as it cooks on low heat for three to four hours.
This slow cooking method ensures the beef patties become tender and infused with the onion and mushroom flavors, while the gravy thickens and deepens in taste. The sauce is creamy and rich with earthy mushroom notes balanced by the au jus seasoning.
Serve the Salisbury Steak with starchy sides such as mashed potatoes or egg noodles to take advantage of the flavorful gravy. For lighter options, cauliflower rice or brown rice can also work. The inclusion of greens like roasted broccoli or asparagus complements the meal with freshness and color.
The recipe can be adapted by preparing it in an oven casserole dish, baking at 325°F for about an hour, or by shaping the beef mixture into meatballs as a variation. Additionally, the recipe is suitable for using ground chicken or turkey for a different protein base. Leftover ground beef from a standard pound package can be frozen for future meals when halving the recipe for smaller servings.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground beef I used 96% lean
- 1 onion soup mix 1 ounce packet, dry
- ¼ cup breadcrumbs I used Panko breadcrumbs
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 onion diced, small
- 1 mushroom sliced fresh, 8 ounce container
- 2 cream of mushroom soup 10.5 ounces each can, condensed, not diluted
- 1 au jus gravy mix 1 ounce packet, dry, such as McCormick brand
- ¾ cup water
Instructions
- In a large bowl, gently use your hands to mix together ground beef, onion soup mix, breadcrumbs, and milk.
- Shape meat into 4 patties.
- Heat about 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for about 3 minutes per side, or just until browned (but not cooked through).
- Place onions and mushrooms in the bottom of a large slow cooker. Place patties on top.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together condensed soup, dry au jus mix, and water. Pour sauce into the slow cooker.
- Cook on LOW for 3-4 hours.
Notes
- The recipe can be baked in an oven casserole dish at 325°F for approximately 1 hour instead of using a slow cooker.
- The beef mixture can be shaped as meatballs instead of patties, with the same cooking instructions.
- Ground chicken or turkey can substitute for beef, though flavor will differ.
- Serve this dish with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or biscuits to soak up the gravy; vegetables like roasted broccoli or asparagus complement the meal.
- For smaller servings, halve the recipe and freeze leftover ground beef for future use.
