Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken
Description
This Slow Cooker Teriyaki Chicken recipe uses a combination of teriyaki sauce, brown sugar, low sodium soy sauce and chicken broth infused with minced garlic and sesame oil to create a rich sauce. Skinless, boneless chicken breasts simmer gently in this sauce all day until tender enough to shred easily with forks.
The cooking method in the slow cooker allows the meat to absorb the deep flavors gradually, making it moist and flavorful without drying out. The brown sugar balances salty and umami notes while the sesame oil adds a nutty aroma.
Once cooked, the chicken is shredded directly in the slow cooker and can be served over hot cooked rice, spooning extra sauce on top. Sesame seed garnish adds texture and visual interest. This dish can be accompanied by steamed or roasted vegetables for a complete meal.
Careful not to add extra salt as the sauce ingredients are already seasoned. Using an instant-read thermometer ensures the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). You can add cut vegetables to the slow cooker along with the chicken for added nutrition and flavor.
Ingredients
- 3 chicken breast skinless and boneless
- ½ cup chicken broth low sodium
- ½ cup teriyaki sauce
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 5 garlic minced, cloves
- ¼ cup soy sauce low sodium
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- sesame seeds for garnish
Instructions
- Combine chicken broth, teriyaki sauce, brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil and garlic cloves in large bowl.
- Add chicken to sauce, and toss to combine.
- Place the chicken along with the sauce into the slow cooker.
- Cook on low 4 to 6 hours or high for 2 to 3 hours, or until chicken is cooked through.
- Shred the chicken with a couple forks and serve over hot cooked rice and spoon extra sauce if desired. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with additional veggies if preferred.
Notes
- Do not add extra salt; soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and broth provide sufficient seasoning.
- Use an instant-read meat thermometer to ensure chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) for food safety.
- Newer slow cookers with timers are convenient to prevent overcooking.
- Add bite-sized vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, or broccoli to the slow cooker for extra nutrition and flavor.
- Keep cooked chicken warm after slow cooking until served.
