Soft M & M Cookies

Soft M & M Cookies combine a classic cookie dough base with colorful candy-coated chocolates that create a rich, sweet flavor and a soft, tender texture. The dough uses a mix of brown and white sugars, butter, and optional cornstarch to achieve a chewy consistency. Baking at a high temperature briefly results in cookies with lightly golden edges and a soft center, while extra M & M's placed on top ensure a bright, candy-studded appearance after baking.

Description

The Soft M & M Cookies recipe uses a creaming method with butter and sugars to create a tender and fluffy dough. The addition of cornstarch is optional but helps produce thicker, softer cookies by tenderizing the flour proteins. The dough is combined with baking soda for leavening and salt for balance, and finally folded with colorful M & M candies. Baking at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for a short duration allows the edges to lightly brown while keeping the centers soft and moist. Topping the dough balls with extra M & M's before baking gives an appealing look where the candies are visible on the surface.

Because of the high baking temperature and precise mixing method, the cookies come out with a firm but tender structure. They provide a satisfying chew with bursts of candy sweetness. These cookies suit those who enjoy a soft texture and a candy-coated crunch in every bite. The recipe suggests using parchment paper or silicone baking mats to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.

This recipe is well-suited for making standard-sized cookies that maintain their shape during baking, offering a colorful and festive appearance. They can be served as a dessert or snack and pair well with milk or tea. Leftovers should be cooled completely and stored in an airtight container to keep the cookies soft.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup butter cut into cubes and microwave on high for 8 seconds, cold
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 2 3/4 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (optional- this makes softer, thicker cookies)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups M&M's plus more for placing on top of cookie dough balls, plain

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, cream butter, brown sugar, and sugar for 4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix for 1 minute longer.
  3. Stir in flour, cornstarch, baking soda, and salt. Mix just until combined. Fold in M & M's.
  4.  Scoop cookie dough onto baking sheets. I suggest using parchment paper or Silpat silicone baking sheets on light-colored baking sheets. Place extra M & M's on top of cookie dough balls so the M & M's show up after baking.
  5. Bake for 9-11 minutes or until the edges just begin to turn a light golden color. Remove from oven and let set for 5 minutes before removing from the cookie sheet.
