Description

To make Soft Sugar Cookies, cream room-temperature butter with sugar until light and fluffy, then add eggs, milk, and vanilla extract. Dry ingredients of flour, baking powder, and salt are gradually mixed in to form a dough that can be rolled out on a floured surface. The dough is rolled to about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into shapes with cookie cutters.

Baking at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 12 minutes is critical to ensure the cookies remain soft rather than forming a hard texture. They should be removed while still slightly underbaked, as residual heat finishes cooking them on the pan. Cooling on a wire rack precedes frosting.

The cream cheese frosting is prepared by beating softened cream cheese, butter, and vanilla, then adding powdered sugar until the desired sweetness and texture are reached. Food coloring and sprinkles can be added for decoration. The frosting spreads smoothly on cooled cookies without melting.

Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup butter softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 to 1½ pounds powdered sugar
  • candy sprinkles optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  2. Add eggs, milk and vanilla.
  3. In separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt.
  4. Slowing add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix together until you can form a large dough ball. On floured surface, roll out dough ball until about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  5. Use cookie cutters (or rim of a drinking glass) to cut cookie shapes out of dough.
  6. Place cookies on lightly sprayed cookie sheet. Bake about 10-12 minutes. DON'T OVERCOOK OR THEY WILL BE HARD!
  7. After baking, move cookies to a cooling rack to cool before frosting.

FROSTING

  1. Beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar and mix until desired consistency. Add food coloring if desired.
  3. Spread frosting over cooled cookies. If adding sprinkles, add them immediately after frosting.

Notes

  • Do not overbake the cookies; remove them after 10-12 minutes while slightly underdone for softness.
  • Use parchment paper or silicone baking mats to prevent cookies from sticking during baking.
