Sourdough Croutons
Description
This recipe uses four slices of sourdough bread cut and tossed with olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper to evenly coat each piece. Baking at 350°F crisps the bread without burning it, creating golden, crunchy croutons. Adding Parmesan cheese in the final few minutes in the oven allows it to melt lightly over the croutons, adding a rich flavor and slight saltiness.
The croutons have a firm exterior with a slightly chewy interior due to the sourdough base, contributing a familiar tangy flavor. They offer a nice contrast in texture when sprinkled over soups or leafy salads.
Alternatively, smaller batches can be toasted in a frying pan for convenience, and using infused oils (such as garlic or chili) enhances flavor. Ensuring thorough coating helps even crisping, and letting the croutons cool fully before serving maintains their crunch.
Ingredients
- 4 lice sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoon olive oil
- 30 g parmesan grated
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 1 pinch black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C(fan)/350°F/Gas 4.
- Put 4 slice Sourdough bread, 2 tablespoon Olive oil and 1 pinch Sea salt and ground black pepper in a bowl and mix well.
- Spread the croutons out on a large baking tray and put into the oven for 10 minutes.
- Take them out of the oven and sprinkle over 30 g Parmesan, and then put them back in the oven for 3 minutes.
Notes
- For small quantities, pan-toasting croutons works well as a quicker alternative to baking.
- Using a butter and oil mix enriches flavor and texture compared to olive oil alone.
- Make sure croutons are evenly coated with oil and seasonings to promote uniform crispness.
- Allow croutons to cool completely after baking to maintain their crunchy texture.
- Experiment with flavored oils like garlic or chili to add extra seasoning layers.
