Southern Chocolate Cobbler
Description
Southern Chocolate Cobbler combines cocoa, sugar, self-rising flour, milk, and vanilla into a batter poured over melted butter in a baking dish. A topping of sugar and cocoa is sprinkled on top before pouring boiling water over it, which forms a syrupy sauce during baking. The casserole bakes until the top sets but the bottom remains moist and pudding-like. This dessert offers a soft, fudgy texture balanced by a slightly crisp top layer.
The chocolate flavor is rich but balanced by the sweetness and creamy milk in the batter. The boiling water added post-assembly thickens and creates a saucy layer beneath the topping, giving the cobbler its distinctive, comforting texture. Baking at 350ºF ensures even cooking and melting of butter to infuse richness.
Serving Southern Chocolate Cobbler warm with vanilla ice cream enhances the experience, adding creaminess and temperature contrast. It is suitable for family gatherings or casual dessert occasions where a hearty, chocolatey finish is desired.
To store, cover the cobbler tightly and refrigerate for several days or freeze for longer storage. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave, ensuring not to disturb the topping and sauce layering.
