Spaghetti and Meatballs
Description
The meatballs combine ground beef, Italian seasoned bread crumbs, salt, pepper, and egg, mixed gently to avoid a dense texture. Rolling into 12 portions and lightly dredging in flour helps them brown evenly. Browning in olive oil creates a crust but the meatballs finish cooking separately in simmering pasta sauce, which keeps them moist and infuses flavor.
The spaghetti is cooked in boiling water until tender, drained, and served topped with meatballs and sauce. Parmesan cheese adds a salty, nutty finish. The balance of tender meat, savory tomato sauce, and firm pasta makes this an enduring comfort meal.
Careful mixing and rolling prevent tough meatballs, while partially cooking them in the pan before simmering in sauce avoids dryness. Homemade or preferred marinara sauce may be used, and frozen meatballs can substitute to save time without sacrificing the dish's character.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 c. bread crumbs Italian seasoned
- 1/2 tsp salt sea salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb 10 oz pasta sauce
- 8 oz spaghetti
- 1/2 c. Parmesan Cheese grated
Instructions
How to Make Meatballs
- Combine ground beef, bread crumbs, sea salt, pepper & egg. Shape into 12 meatballs.
- Dredge or roll your meatballs in flour making sure to dust off the excess. Heat a deep, large skillet or dutch oven over medium heat with 3 Tbsp olive oil.
- Add meatballs to pan and saute until browned on all sides. About 6 minutes total. Then remove meatballs and set aside. They will not be cooked through at this point, just browned on the sides.
How to Make Spaghetti and Meatballs
- In skillet or dutch oven that you previous used (you might want to wipe out the grease) add spaghetti sauce and bring to a simmer. Gently add in meatballs, cover and simmer for about 20 minutes or until meatballs are cooked through.
- In the meantime bring water to a boil and cook spaghetti according to directions.
- Serve over hot spaghetti. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.
Notes
- Mix meatball ingredients lightly to keep them tender and juicy, avoiding overworking the mixture.
- Roll meatballs gently, just enough to hold their shape to prevent dense texture.
- Brown meatballs on all sides without fully cooking; they finish cooking in the sauce to remain moist.
- Using favorite homemade marinara or frozen meatballs is acceptable for convenience and flavor.
