Spanish Rice

This Spanish Rice features long grain white rice sautéed with diced onion and garlic, then simmered in tomato sauce and broth until tender and fully flavored. The method of browning the rice first develops a lightly toasted nutty note, while the simmering step allows the tomato and broth to infuse the grains. This side dish complements a variety of main courses with its moist texture and savory taste.

Description

The Spanish Rice begins by cooking the rice and diced onion in cooking oil over medium-high heat, stirring until the rice lightly browns, imparting a subtle toasted flavor and firm texture. Garlic is added next, cooking briefly to release aroma before mixing in tomato sauce, coating the rice evenly. The subsequent addition of chicken or vegetable broth provides moisture and depth of flavor.

The pot is brought to a boil, then covered and reduced to a simmer, allowing the liquid to absorb slowly into the rice over 20 to 25 minutes. The result is fully cooked rice with a slightly tangy and savory profile thanks to the tomato sauce and broth combination.

This rice pairs well with a variety of dishes such as grilled meats, beans, or stews. Its moist but not soupy texture allows it to complement rather than overshadow other flavors on the plate.
