Spicy Hoisin Chicken Bowls
Description
This dish begins by wilting finely sliced cabbage and julienned carrots either in the microwave or by steaming, preserving some crunch and moisture. Rice, preferably sticky short grain, is cooked separately to provide a soft base. Chicken breast portions are sautéed in sesame oil until cooked through and then tossed with chili garlic paste for heat and flavor.
Hoisin sauce is gently warmed to enhance its sweetness and allow for easy drizzling over the cooked chicken. The bowls are assembled with rice at the base, topped with the wilted vegetables and spicy chicken, then finished with hoisin sauce and a garnish of sesame seeds to add a nutty aroma and slight crunch.
This meal offers a satisfying combination of flavors typical in East Asian cooking and can be varied by adjusting the amount of chili paste for preferred heat levels. Using pre-cut vegetables and ready-to-cook chicken simplifies preparation.
Ingredients
- 1 pound chicken breast (Foster Farms Sauté Ready Asian Chicken)
- 4 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons chili garlic paste
- 1 cabbage finely sliced, bag
- 2 carrot julienned
- 6 cups rice (I used sticky short grain Japanese rice)
- 1/2 cup hoisin sauce
- 1 teaspoon sesame seeds , for garnish
Instructions
- Add the carrots and cabbage to a glass bowl and cover with wet paper towel.
- Microwave for 3-4 minutes to wilt the cabbage.
- If you prefer not to use the microwave you can add to a steam basket or you can sauté (but this would require a bit of oil to prevent the cabbage from burning).
- Warm up or cook the rice.
- Using a large skillet, heat the pan on high.
- Add the sesame oil and half the bag of the Foster Farms Sauté Ready Asian Chicken.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, then toss with the chili garlic paste.
- Warm the hoisin sauce for 10-15 second in the microwave with a wet paper towel on top of the bowl.
- Serve with rice on the bottom of the bowl, then the wilted cabbage and chicken. Add the hoisin sauce on top of the chicken and the sesame seeds as a garnish
