Spicy Hot Chocolate Recipe
Description
The Spicy Hot Chocolate Recipe melts chopped dark chocolate with a portion of milk, then combines it with cinnamon, vanilla, salt, and a halved chili pepper simmered briefly to impart a mild heat. After steeping and removing the chili, coconut sugar is added gradually to reach desired sweetness. Optionally, brandy or Grand Marnier can be stirred in for an additional flavor layer. The result is a smooth, creamy hot chocolate with gentle warmth from the chili and balanced sweetness.
This hot chocolate is suitable for cold days when a warming beverage with a spicy twist is welcome. The cinnamon and vanilla complement the chocolate, while the chili offers a background heat that doesn't overpower.
Using whole milk provides a creamy texture, but dairy-free options like oat milk are also suitable. Adjust sweetness and spice level by varying coconut sugar and chili amount.
Ingredients
- ½ cup dark chocolate chopped
- 2 cups milk see notes
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon each
- 1 teaspoon vanilla each
- 1 pinch salt sea salt
- 1 Chili pepper split in half and seeds removed
- 1-4 tablespoons coconut sugar depending on taste
- brandy or Grand Marnier, 2 shots, optional
Instructions
- Melt the chocolate with a little of the milk in a small pot over medium heat. Once it has melted, whisk in the remaining milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt. Add the chili pepper to the pot and bring the pot almost to a boil. Remove the pot from the heat and let it sit for 10 minutes. Remove and discard the chili pepper.
- Whisk in the sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, and taste until it is a sweetness you like. If you are using the brandy or Grand Marnier, add it to the pot
- Pour the spicy hot chocolate into mugs and serve!
Notes
- Whole milk gives the richest texture, but you can substitute any milk, including oat milk for a dairy-free version.
- Adjust coconut sugar quantity to taste, starting with 1 tablespoon and increasing if needed.
- Removing chili seeds reduces heat and bitterness, allowing a balanced warmth.
