Spider Cookies

Spider Cookies are soft baked treats made with brown sugar and butter, studded with chocolate chips arranged as spider bodies. Black icing is used to pipe spider legs around the chocolate chips, giving each cookie a spooky decoration. These cookies have a tender texture and rich sweetness ideal for Halloween or themed occasions.

Description

Spider Cookies begin with a dough made from melted butter, brown and white sugar, egg, vanilla, flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips. After mixing and portioning onto a baking sheet, extra chocolate chips are pressed on top of each cookie to serve as the spider bodies. Baking them for 9 minutes results in a slightly underdone center that sets as the cookies cool, ensuring softness.

When cooled, black writing icing is piped around the chocolate chips to create spider legs, adding a decorative and thematic element that enhances their festive appearance. This decoration ties directly to the chocolate chip placement, making the cookies visually striking.

These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to five days, maintaining their soft texture and appearance. Any variety of chocolate chips may be used depending on preference; darker chocolate chips provide better contrast for the spider legs, while milk chocolate chips offer a sweeter taste favored by kids.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips plus more for decorating
  • 1 tube writing icing black

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Add the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar to a large bowl and beat well with a mixer until well combined.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla until just combined.
  4. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt to the bowl and mix until combined.
  5. Stir the chocolate chips in by hand.
  6. Use a medium cookie scoop to scoop out 12 balls of dough and place on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Stick a couple of chocolate chips into the tops of each cookie upside down.
  8. Bake for 9 minutes exactly. Cookies will look slightly underdone, but will set up as they cool.
  9. Once cookies are cool, use the icing to pipe legs around the chocolate chips.
  10. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Use your preferred type of chocolate chips; darker chocolate matches decorative spider legs best, while milk chocolate suits sweeter preferences.
  • Cookies should be baked exactly 9 minutes; they will look slightly underbaked but will firm up as they cool for a soft texture.
  • Store baked cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days to preserve freshness and decoration.
