Spider Cookies
Description
This Spider Cookies recipe creates a soft cookie dough combining all-purpose flour, baking soda, salt, melted butter, sugars, eggs, vanilla, and chocolate chips. The dough's consistency is soft but firm enough to scoop. Baking at 350°F for 10-12 minutes yields cookies set around the edges but tender inside.
After baking, additional chocolate chips are pressed into the warm cookie tops. Separately melted chocolate is piped onto the cookies from a small opening cut in a plastic bag to form spider legs around the clusters of chocolate chips that serve as the spider bodies. This decoration adds a playful and decorative element.
These cookies work as seasonal treats or novelty desserts. Their soft texture balances the chewiness of the chocolate chips and the smooth melted chocolate. The recipe lends itself to making multiple cookies ahead.
Storage instructions recommend keeping cookies in airtight containers at room temperature for a day or two, or freezing baked cookies for up to three months for longer keeping.
Ingredients
- 2 cups + 2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 12 Tablespoons butter , melted and cooled until warm
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 cups chocolate chips divided, semi-sweet
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Make Cooking Dough: In a medium bowl mix together flour, salt, and baking soda. In a separate large mixing bowl beat the butter and sugars together with an electric mixer until well blended. Add the egg, egg yolk, and vanilla. Stir in the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gently stir in ¾ cup chocolate chips. The dough will be soft.
- Bake: Scoop dough into balls and place on a parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Add chocolate chips on top: Remove from oven and place 3-4 chocolate chips into the tops of each cookie, point side up.
- Melt Chocolate: Add remaining chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl and microwave, on low power, stirring every 30 seconds, until melted.
- Draw Spider legs: Spoon the melted chocolate into a ziplock bag. Use scissors to cut the smallest slit from one of the corners (you want the hole to be very small to make your spider legs). Squeeze the melted chocolate through the small hole, next to the chocolate chips on top of the cookie, to make 8 spider legs.
Notes
- Store baked cookies at room temperature in an airtight container for 1-2 days to maintain freshness.
- For longer storage, freeze baked cookies in a freezer-safe container or bag for up to 3 months.
