Stained Glass Jello
Description
To make Stained Glass Jello, separate gelatin flavors are dissolved in boiling water and poured into pans to set into firm sheets. The sheets are chilled for several hours or overnight, then inverted and cut into evenly sized cubes. These colorful cubes are arranged in a single layer within a larger pan.
A creamy white gelatin base is prepared by blooming unflavored gelatin in cold water, dissolving it in boiling water, and blending it with sweetened condensed milk. Once cooled to room temperature, this milk gelatin mixture is poured evenly over the layer of jello cubes, embedding them in a smooth white matrix.
After complete setting in the refrigerator, the dessert slices to reveal translucent colored jello pieces suspended in a milky background, resembling stained glass. The recipe suggests using smaller pans for deeper layers and easier shaping, while lining pans with plastic wrap aids removal. Optional shapes can be cut from the cubes for decorative effect.
Ingredients
- 6 ounce strawberry jello box
- 6 ounce berry blue gelatin dessert boxed
- 14 ounce sweetened condensed milk can
- 2 unflavored gelatin envelopes
- 5½ cups water divided, boiling
- ½ cup water cold
Instructions
- Line four loaf pans or other small pans with plastic wrap. In four separate bowls, dissolve one box of Jello in 1 cup of boiling water. Stir for 2 full minutes, until it is completely dissolved, then allow to cool to room temperature. Pour each into the prepared pans and chill at least 3 hours, or overnight.
- Turn the chilled Jello out onto a cutting board and slice into ½-inch blocks.
- Add the blocks to a jelly roll pan or 9x13-inch pan that has been lined with plastic wrap. Gently spread the blocks so they are in an even layer and the colors are evenly mixed.
- In a separate large bowl, sprinkle 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin into ½ cup cold water and allow to sit for 5 minutes. After the gelatin blooms (it will look mostly dissolved and get wrinkly on the surface), add 1½ cups boiling water and stir to dissolve. Add the can of condensed milk and stir to combine; set aside to cool to room temperature. Pour the cooled milk mixture over the red and blue Jello blocks in the pan. Chill overnight, or at least 3 hours until firm.
- Cut into blocks or shapes and serve.
Notes
- Line pans with plastic wrap to easily remove gelatin sheets for cutting and assembly.
- Smaller pans yield thicker jello cubes that hold shape better, especially for cutting shapes.
- A jelly roll pan offers an ideal thickness for cutting decorative shapes; a 9x13 pan works well for block cutting.
