Steamed Broccoli

Steamed Broccoli is prepared by gently steaming broccoli florets until bright green and tender-crisp, then drizzled with a flavorful sauce made from garlic sautéed in neutral oil, water, oyster sauce, light soy sauce, sesame oil, and pepper. The result is vibrant, cooked broccoli with a savory, slightly tangy glaze that enhances the vegetable's natural flavor and maintains a pleasing crunch or tenderness depending on cooking time.

Description

The Steamed Broccoli recipe involves steaming fresh broccoli florets using various steaming methods until they reach desired tenderness—4 minutes for crispness or up to 7 for softer texture. The sauce combines minced garlic cooked briefly in oil with water, oyster sauce or its vegetarian version, light soy sauce, sesame oil, and white or black ground pepper, which is then simmered briefly. After steaming, the broccoli is plated and topped with this warm sauce, adding a savory and umami-rich finish. The method preserves broccoli’s bright color and provides a balanced mix of garlic and soy-based flavors, ideal as a side dish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound broccoli florets
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce or vegetarian oyster sauce
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce light
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground white pepper or black pepper

Instructions

  1. Using one of our suggested steaming methods (bamboo or metal steamer, wok with steaming rack, a metal steaming basket, or our no-equipment method), bring water to a boil, place the broccoli into the steamer set-up, and cover.
  2. Steam over medium heat for 4 minutes (for crunchier broccoli) to 7 minutes (for more tender broccoli), until the broccoli is still bright green but cooked to your liking. Cooking time will also depend on the size of your broccoli florets—less time for smaller florets, and more time for larger ones.
  3. Meanwhile, make the sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, add the oil and garlic. Cook for 30 seconds, or until the garlic softens (there shouldn’t be any browning). Add the water, oyster sauce, light soy sauce, sesame oil, and pepper. Stir the ingredients together, and bring to a simmer. Once simmering, turn off the heat.
  4. Plate your steamed broccoli and drizzle with the sauce. Serve.
