Sticky Sesame Tofu

Sticky Sesame Tofu features cubed, pressed tofu coated with a mix of soy sauce and cornstarch, pan-fried to crisp edges, then cooked in a thick, flavorful sauce made from soy, brown sugar, sesame oil, garlic, ginger, and lime. The cooking process balances a crispy exterior with a glossy, sticky coating rich in sesame seeds and aromatic notes, offering a versatile main or side dish.

Description

This Sticky Sesame Tofu recipe starts by coating pressed tofu cubes in a mixture of soy sauce and cornstarch, which helps develop a crispy texture when pan-fried in oil over high heat. Cooking the tofu undisturbed on each side allows it to achieve a golden, crisp exterior.

The sauce blends soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, lime juice, sesame oil, minced garlic, and ginger, balanced for a sweet and tangy flavor with depth from toasted sesame seeds. After the tofu crisps, simmering it gently in the sauce thickens the glaze to a sticky consistency that clings to the tofu cubes.

The resulting dish combines textures of crisp tofu with a glossy, richly seasoned sauce accented with sesame seeds. It can be served hot or cold and garnished with additional sesame seeds and green onions for fresh brightness and crunch, making it suitable for a main course or an accompaniment in plant-based meals.

Adjustments to sweetness and acidity can be made by varying sugar and vinegar or lime components to taste. Altering tofu shape, such as tearing instead of cubing, can create varied textures and more crispy edges. Cooking in batches without overcrowding ensures the tofu crisps properly without steaming. Avoid stirring too often to let the tofu sear evenly.

Ingredients

Servings

For the tofu:

  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 4 tablespoons corn starch
  • 16 ounces tofu cubed and pressed, super firm
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil high heat

For the sauce:

  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons corn starch
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • ½ lime
  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 2 garlic minced, cloves
  • 2 tablespoons ginger minced
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds plus more for garnish
  • ¼ cup green onion optional, sliced

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl add the soy sauce, and cornstarch. Mix well and add the cubed tofu. Mix to fully coat the tofu. Set aside while you make the sauce.
  2. In a bowl or jar, mix all the sauce ingredients and set aside.
  3. In a large pan, add the 2 tablespoons of high heat oil and heat over high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the tofu. Cook until all or most of the sides are golden and look crispy.
  4. Then, reduce the heat to a simmer and carefully add the sauce. Cover with a lid and let it cook until it thickens for about 2-5 minutes.
  5. Serve hot or cold. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

Notes

  • Adjust sugar, vinegar, and lime juice quantities to balance sweetness and acidity to your preference.
  • Try tearing tofu into uneven pieces to add varied texture and more crispy edges.
  • Cook tofu in batches without crowding the pan to ensure maximum crispness.
  • Do not stir tofu frequently during frying; allow it to sear on each side to develop a crisp crust.
