Stovetop Apple Crisp
Description
This recipe cooks peeled and chopped Gala apples in butter with ground cinnamon and brown sugar over medium heat until soft and tender, taking around seven minutes. A separate topping of oats, chopped pecans, sesame seeds, light brown sugar, and butter is browned slowly in a small pan to create a crunchy texture.
The apples are served hot in bowls with the crisp topping spooned over. The optional addition of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream adds creaminess and contrast to the warm fruit and crunchy topping.
Gala apples are recommended for their balance of sweetness and texture, with Fuji apples as an alternative. Leftover apples and toppings should be stored separately and reheated on the stovetop within one day for best texture.
Ingredients
For the apples:
- 2 tablespoons butter unsalted
- 4 apple Gala, peeled, cored, cut into ½-inch chunks
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
For the topping:
- ½ tablespoon butter unsalted
- 1 teaspoon light brown sugar
- ¼ cup rolled oats also called old-fashioned oats
- ¼ cup pecans chopped
- 1 ½ teaspoons sesame seeds
- Whipped Cream optional
- vanilla ice cream optional
Instructions
For the apples:
- Melt the butter in a skillet.
- Add apples, cinnamon and brown sugar. Stir until well combined.
- Put on the lid. Let the apples cook on medium to medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until they are soft (about 7 minutes).
For the topping:
- Melt the butter in a small pan.
- Add sugar, oats, pecans and sesame seeds and brown for a few minutes until crunchy. (Do this on relatively low heat and watch closely, it will burn easily.)
- Serve apples in a bowl and sprinkle the topping on.
- Top with ice cream or whipped cream (optional).
Notes
- Gala apples work best for this crisp; Fuji apples make a good second choice.
- Store leftover apples and topping separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to 1 day.
- Reheat apples and topping separately on the stovetop before serving again to maintain texture.
