Stovetop Chocolate Cake
Description
The Stovetop Chocolate Cake recipe begins by creaming softened butter and sugar until pale and fluffy, then whisking in eggs one at a time. Sifted flour, cocoa powder, and baking powder are folded in to form a smooth batter. The batter is poured into a greased and lined cake pan.
Instead of traditional baking, the cake pan is placed on an upside down plate inside a deep, wide saucepan filled with simmering water just below the plate level. The covered pan steams the cake gently for about 25 to 30 minutes until it has risen and is firm to the touch.
This steaming method yields a moist chocolate cake with a tender crumb without the need for an oven. It is important to monitor water levels in the saucepan and top up with hot water as needed during cooking. The recipe notes that it can also be baked in a conventional oven at 350°F (180°C) for 35-40 minutes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter softened, 8oz/225g
- 1 cup sugar 8oz / 225g
- 4 egg room temperature
- 1 cup all-purpose flour 5oz/142g
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder 2oz/57g
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
Notes
- Watch the steaming method carefully to ensure water levels stay sufficient during cooking.
- This cake can also be baked conventionally at 350°F (180°C) for 35-40 minutes if preferred.
- Use a wider, deeper saucepan than the cake pan to allow for proper steaming setup.
