Strawberry Shortcake Crumbs

Strawberry Shortcake Crumbs combine strawberry-flavored Jell-O with flour, butter, sugar, and vanilla to create two types of crumbly components that are baked until lightly crisp. The mixture produces a textured topping or garnish with contrasting strawberry and vanilla notes and a sandy, crumbly consistency. These crumbs add a delicate sweetness and fruity hint suitable for decorating desserts or layering in shortcakes.

Description

The Strawberry Shortcake Crumbs feature two crumble mixtures made separately: one combining strawberry Jell-O, flour, and butter, and another blending flour, sugar, butter, and vanilla extract. These mixtures are spread and lightly mixed on a parchment-lined baking sheet before baking at 350°F for 7-8 minutes without stirring. Once cooled, the crumbs can be stored in the refrigerator and stirred before use to break up any sticking. This results in a crumbly topping with subtle fruitiness and vanilla flavor that can be used to enhance the texture and taste of desserts like shortcakes.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3 ounces Jell-O strawberry flavored; box
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour divided
  • 1/2 cup butter cold and divided, unsalted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar white
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a medium bowl using a fork stir Jell-o with 1/2 cup flour and 1/4 cup butter, until you get a crumble mixture.
  3. In another medium bowl stir 1/2 cup flour, with 1/2 cup sugar, and 1/4 cup butter, plus 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix until you get a crumble mixture.
  4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and sprinkle on it the strawberry crumbles. Next, sprinkle on the vanilla crumbles, and slightly mix them.
  5. Bake for 7-8 minutes and do NOT stir.
  6. Remove from the oven and let cool completely on the baking sheet before storing into an airtight container in the fridge. When ready to use, take a fork and stir them first as they tend to stick together a bit.
  7. The recipe makes 3 cups of crumbles.
