Stromboli Recipe

Stromboli is a rolled pizza dish filled with layers of mozzarella cheese, marinara sauce, and a mix of sliced ham, salami, and pepperoni. The dough is rolled tightly with fillings and glazed with an egg wash seasoned with Italian herbs and garlic powder to create a golden crust. Baking until puffed and golden yields a savory, cohesive roll that can be sliced for serving.

Description

The Stromboli Recipe features a sheet of pizza dough spread with marinara sauce and layered with mozzarella and a combination of ham, salami, and pepperoni. The dough is carefully rolled up to encase the fillings and sealed with a seasoned egg wash, which helps create a flavorful, golden crust when baked. Baking at a moderate temperature for 24-28 minutes cooks the dough through and allows the cheese to melt inside.

The result is a substantial, savory roll with a tender interior of melted cheese and meats, and a slightly crisp exterior from the egg wash. Slicing the stromboli into portions makes it suitable for sharing as a main dish or appetizer.

This stromboli can be made with variations in toppings, including pre-cooked vegetables to avoid excess moisture. Leftovers can be refrigerated or frozen for convenience, and brushing with butter instead of egg wash offers an alternative crust finish.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 can pizza dough enough for 1 pizza, refrigerated
  • cups mozzarella cheese divided, shredded
  • cup marinara sauce or pizza sauce
  • 4 ounces ham sliced
  • 4 ounces salami slices
  • 4 ounces pepperoni slices
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pizza dough into a rectangle approximately 12x16-inches.
  3. Spread the marinara sauce over the pizza dough, leaving a 1-inch border all around the edges and a 3-inch border at the long side furthest from you.
  4. Sprinkle 1 cup of mozzarella over the marinara sauce, then add the ham, salami, and pepperoni. Finish with the remaining cheese.
  5. Roll up the pizza dough tightly, being careful not to push out the toppings. Stop just before reaching the end.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk the egg, water, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder. Brush the mixture over the pizza dough where the edges will meet, then pinch them together.
  7. Place the stromboli, seam side down, on the prepared baking sheet with the seal facing down and brush with the egg wash.
  8. Bake for 24-28 minutes until golden brown and slightly puffed. Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • Customize with your choice of pizza toppings; pre-cook and cool vegetables to reduce moisture before adding.
  • Instead of egg wash, melted butter or garlic butter can be brushed on the dough for the crust.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze individual slices in zip bags for up to 1 month.
