Sugar Cookie Icing

Sugar Cookie Icing is a smooth, glossy frosting made from powdered sugar, milk, corn syrup, and vanilla or almond extract. The icing reaches a consistency that drips slowly from a spoon, making it ideal for spreading or piping onto sugar cookies. Optional food coloring enables customization of shade, and its quick hardening allows for crisp, clean edges once it sets.

Description

Sugar Cookie Icing combines sifted powdered sugar with a measured amount of milk, corn syrup, and flavor extract to achieve a smooth texture. The mixture is stirred vigorously to eliminate lumps and to reach a consistency that slowly drips off a spoon, which is crucial for both spreading and piping. Adding food coloring lets you personalize the icing’s appearance for various occasions.

The icing hardens rapidly after application, so it’s best to add any decorative sprinkles immediately to ensure they stick well. Allowing the icing to set completely, around 12 hours, is necessary when stacking or wrapping cookies to prevent smudging.

Flavor can be varied by substituting almond extract with vanilla, orange, lemon, maple, or coconut extracts, depending on your preference. Proper sifting of powdered sugar is key to a smooth finish free of lumps.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups powdered sugar sifted
  • 6-8 teaspoons milk
  • 4 teaspoons corn syrup
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract or almond extract
  • Food Coloring optional

Instructions

  1. Sift powdered sugar into a medium bowl. Add 6 teaspoons milk, corn syrup, and extract. Stir vigorously until icing is smooth.
  2. If needed, add additional milk to thin icing more. You've reached the correct consistency for frosting if a scoop of icing slowly falls off the spoon. If making colored icing, divide into bowls and add food coloring.

Notes

  • Start with less milk and gradually add more to control icing thickness.
  • Sift powdered sugar before mixing to avoid lumps in icing.
  • Add sprinkles immediately after applying icing since it hardens quickly.
  • Let icing harden completely (about 12 hours) before stacking or storing decorated cookies.
  • Feel free to substitute the extract for flavors like orange, lemon, maple, or coconut.
