Super Simple Guacamole (+ Video)
Description
This guacamole recipe emphasizes the use of firm yet ripe avocados that yield a slightly chunky mixture when mashed. Ingredients like seasoning salt, garlic powder, and optional diced tomatoes and fresh salsa contribute layers of flavor, while freshly squeezed lime juice adds brightness and helps delay browning. Fresh cilantro is included for its distinctive herbal aroma and taste.
The preparation is straightforward, starting by halving and scooping the avocados before mashing them lightly. Seasonings are added gradually, allowing for adjustment to personal taste. The addition of salsa introduces spice and texture. The lime juice not only complements the flavors but also acts as a natural preservative against oxidation.
Guacamole can be served immediately with tortilla chips or as a side for various dishes. The recipe notes including tips for storing guacamole to keep it fresh longer, such as smoothing the surface, pressing plastic wrap directly onto it, and adding extra citrus juice to slow browning. If a brown layer forms, it can be stirred back in or gently skimmed off.
Ingredients
- 2-3 avocado but firm, gives slightly under a tiny bit of pressure, if you remove the stem, it should be bright green. Halved, scooped and pitted, small-medium, ripe
- ½ teaspoon seasoning salt more or less to taste, I use Lawry's
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 Roma tomato diced small, optional
- 1-2 tablespoons salsa texture and definitely flavor!, fresh, adds a little spice
- ½ lime juice fresh, squeezed
- kosher salt to taste
- 1 tablespoon cilantro fresh
Instructions
- Using a sharp knife, slice through the avocado to the pit all the way around, then scoop out the avocado flesh using a spoon, repeat with second avocado.
- Mash slightly for more chunky guacamole, you will continue mixing as you add the various ingredients, which will natural smooth it out, we like ours a little chunky.
- Toss in ¼ - ½ teaspoon garlic powder, a few shakes of Lawry's Seasoning salt (not too much, you can always add more salt, you can't remove it) and a tablespoon or two of your favorite salsa.
- Add in fresh, chopped tomatoes (if desired), squeeze in half a lime, then taste. Adding a little more salt, lime or salsa if desired. Finally, stir in 1 tablespoon fresh chopped cilantro, if desired. Serve immediatly with your favorite tortilla chips and salsa!
Notes
- Start with less salt and lime juice, then adjust seasoning by tasting to achieve your preferred balance.
- To slow browning, smooth guacamole to a flat layer and cover tightly with plastic wrap pressing directly onto the surface.
- Adding a thin layer of lime or lemon juice over the guacamole creates a barrier to oxidation.
- Brown spots are safe to eat; you can stir them in or carefully remove the top layer before serving.
- Guacamole typically keeps 1-3 days refrigerated but is best enjoyed fresh.
