Sweet and Sour Shrimp

This Sweet and Sour Shrimp recipe features deveined shrimp stir-fried with garlic and coated in a tangy sauce made from ketchup, soy sauce, sugar, and a touch of chili. The sauce balance of sweet, sour, and umami complements the tender shrimp, while garnishes of scallions and sesame seeds add freshness and crunch. This dish offers a classic East Asian flavor profile perfect for a savory main course.

Description

To prepare Sweet and Sour Shrimp, peeled and deveined shrimp are stir-fried with aromatic garlic in hot oil until just cooked. They are then simmered briefly in a sauce made by mixing ketchup, soy sauce, sugar, water, and optionally chili sauce for mild heat. The sauce thickens slightly, giving a glossy coating to the shrimp that carries sweet and sour notes along with subtle spiciness.

Garnished with chopped scallions and sprinkled with white sesame seeds, the finished dish provides textural contrast and a burst of green flavor. The recipe emphasizes balancing the sauce consistency by adjusting water amount to keep it loose enough to coat but not dry. This shrimp dish can be served alongside steamed rice or simple vegetables.
