Sweet Chili Chicken Wonton Tacos
Description
Sweet Chili Chicken Wonton Tacos feature small cubes of chicken breast marinated and cooked in a flavorful blend of hoisin sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic, and fresh ginger. After cooking, the chicken is coated in sweet chili sauce which gives it a sweet and mildly spicy glaze. The tacos use wonton wrappers baked into crisp taco shells by shaping them over an inverted mini muffin tin and baking briefly to golden crispiness.
The accompanying Asian slaw combines shredded purple and green cabbage, shredded carrots, and thinly sliced green onions, all tossed in a dressing of sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey. This provides a cool and slightly sweet counterpoint to the warm, saucy chicken filling. The assembled tacos are garnished with additional sweet chili sauce, cilantro or parsley, and sesame seeds to add freshness and texture.
These tacos are a tasty fusion snack or light meal that balances crisp, fresh vegetables with savory, saucy chicken inside crunchy wonton shells. The recipe requires some advance prep for the slaw and baked shells but assembles quickly for serving.
Ingredients
Chicken
- 2 chicken breast diced into small cubes
- 2 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 2 teaspoon ginger grated or finely minced, fresh
- 2 tablespoons sweet chili sauce
Asian Slaw
- ½ cup purple cabbage (shredded)
- ½ cup green cabbage (shredded)
- 2 carrot medium sized, shredded
- 3 green onions (thinly sliced)
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon honey
Tacos
- 18 wonton wrappers
- cooking spray (or oil, for cooking wonton tacos shells)
- sweet chili sauce (for dipping)
- cilantro (or parsley)
- sesame seeds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Spray wonton wrappers on both sides with cooking spray or brush with cooking oil of choice.
- Turn a mini muffin tin upside down and press the wonton wrappers between two muffin tin cups to make a taco shell. Bake for 8-10 minutes, watching them closely so they don't burn. Depending on the size of your muffin tin you may need to cook the wonton wrappers in batches.
- Mix diced chicken in a large bowl with the hoisin sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and ginger.
- Heat a large pan on high heat with a teaspoon of cooking oil and cook chicken for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently until cooked through.
- Once the chicken is cooked through turn off the heat and stir in the sweet chili sauce. Toss the chicken until evenly coated.
- To prepare the coleslaw shred your cabbage and carrots, or use store bought coleslaw mix.
- In a large bowl combine the coleslaw mix, green onions and all of the dressing ingredients.
- Mix until well combined.
- Assemble your tacos by adding a spoonful of the chicken mixture to each wonton shells, then top with coleslaw, drizzle with sweet chili sauce and sprinkle with cilantro or parsley and sesame seeds. Serve and enjoy!
