Sweet Sesame Turkey Lettuce Wraps
Description
This recipe starts by sautéing onions, garlic, and minced ginger in sesame oil until translucent, creating a fragrant base. Ground turkey is then added and cooked through, broken up to an even texture. A sauce made by whisking cornstarch slurry with chicken stock, mirin, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and garlic chili sauce is poured over the turkey to coat and thicken, resulting in a moist, flavorful filling with a balanced sweet and savory profile. Sesame seeds atop provide a slight nutty crunch.
The wraps use butter lettuce leaves as a fresh, crisp vehicle to hold the filling, adding lightness and contrast to the savory turkey. These make a satisfying handheld option for lunches or appetizers with a mild kick from the chili sauce.
The recipe accommodates make-ahead preparation with stored turkey filling in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen up to 3 months. Substitutions include ground chicken or beef for turkey, sweet yellow onions, gluten-free oyster sauce variants, or powdered ginger and garlic to simplify ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground turkey
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons ginger minced
- 3-4 cloves garlic
- 1/2 large white onion diced
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoons chicken stock
- 2 tablespoons mirin
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoons oyster sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic chili sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 1 head butter lettuce rinsed
Instructions
- Heat a medium to large-sized skillet and add sesame oil. Add onions, garlic, and ginger. Saute for 2-3 minutes or until onions are transluscent.
- Add ground turkey and use a wooden spoon to break it up as it cooks
- Meanwhile, in a small bowl of spouted pyrex measuring cup, add cornstarch and water and whisk until smooth slurry is formed. Add stock, soy sauce, mirin, oyster sauce, and garlic chili sauce and whisk.
- After 10 minutes, add sauce to turkey and let it simmer to coat turkey while it cooks. Continue to cook until turkey is mostly cooked, another 5 minutes.
- Top with sesame seeds and add about 1/4 cup to each piece of lettuce.
- Enjoy!
Notes
- Store cooked turkey filling in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
- Substitute ground chicken or beef for turkey as desired.
- Use sweet yellow onion instead of white onion if preferred.
- Choose gluten-free oyster sauce to accommodate gluten-free diets or vegetarians.
- Replace fresh ginger and garlic with powdered versions if unavailable.
