Sweet & Spicy Sloppy Joe Recipe

Sweet & Spicy Sloppy Joes combine lean ground beef with a sauce of ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire, and brown sugar, seasoned to taste with garlic, onions, and red pepper flakes. Long cooking melds the flavors into a thick, rich filling served on toasted hamburger buns with melted white cheddar cheese, offering a balance of savory, sweet, and mild heat in a classic sloppy joe style.

Description

The Sweet & Spicy Sloppy Joe Recipe starts by browning lean ground beef with diced onions and garlic, building a flavorful base. The addition of ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and water creates a thick, saucy filling enriched over slow simmering for up to an hour. Red pepper flakes provide adjustable spiciness, while salt and black pepper season to taste.

To complete the sandwich, hamburger buns are toasted on their cut sides with optional butter and garlic rubbing before being piled with the beef mixture and topped with grated white cheddar cheese. This layering adds textural contrast and a creamy, sharp cheese component.

This preparation is convenient for hearty lunches or casual dinners, delivering familiar flavors with a sweet and spicy twist. The long low simmer tenderizes the meat and develops depth without complexity.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb. ground beef 93/7, lean
  • 1 cup onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons mustard
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes add more or less, depending on taste
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns soft
  • White Cheddar Cheese grated

Instructions

  1. Place a large skillet over medium heat and start browning meat, breaking apart as you go. Add in onion and garlic and cook to soften about 5 minutes. Stir in all ingredients to create the sauce and bring it to bubble. Reduce heat immediately to low, cover, and cook 45 minutes-1 hour. {The longer the better}
  2. Toast open sides of hamburger buns spread generously with softened butter and rub with the cut side of a garlic clove if desired. This is totally optional.
  3. Spoon filling onto the bottoms of each bun and sprinkle with grated white cheddar cheese. Top with other bun and enjoy!
