Sweetened Condensed Milk Caramel (Slow Cooker)

This recipe turns sweetened condensed milk into rich caramel by simmering unopened cans in a slow cooker. The process gently cooks the milk into a smooth caramel that can be eaten directly or stored for later use.

Description

The Sweetened Condensed Milk Caramel is made by fully submerging unopened cans of sweetened condensed milk in a slow cooker filled with water. Cooking on low for eight hours slowly transforms the contents into a caramel with a deep, sweet flavor and creamy texture. Safety is important: the cans must cool completely before opening to avoid any dangerous splashes.

This method provides a simple way to create caramel without additional ingredients or stovetop monitoring. The result is a thick, scoopable caramel good for desserts, toppings, or spreads.

The caramel can be eaten straight from the can once cooled or transferred to airtight containers for refrigeration. It keeps in the fridge for up to one month, allowing for convenience and longer storage.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 ounce cans sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

  1. Place the sweetened condensed milk cans in the slow cooker over on their side. We take the labels off, but you can also leave them on.
  2. Add hot water over the cans leaving 2 inches of water over the cans.
  3. Turn on your slow cooker and set the time for 8 hours on low.
  4. Remove cans from slow cooker using hot pads or tongs. Do NOT open the cans just yet while they are Hot. This could result in the cans exploding and could be dangerous. Run the cans under cold water until cooled (about 8 minutes).
  5. Once cooled you can open the cans and dive in. You can eat from the can if you want it immediately, or you can spoon the caramel into air tight jars or glass containers to store in the fridge.

Notes

  • Do not open cans while hot to avoid dangerous splattering; wait until cooled completely.
  • Store caramel in airtight containers in the fridge for up to 1 month.
