Swiss Steak Over Mashed Potatoes

Swiss Steak Over Mashed Potatoes features tender stew meat slow-cooked with onions, garlic, carrots, tomato juice, herbs, and peas until fork-tender. The rich, savory meat mixture is served atop creamy mashed potatoes made with butter, cream cheese, and milk. This hearty dish offers comfort through its robust flavors and soft textures, combining a saucy meat stew with smooth potatoes.

Description

This recipe prepares Swiss steak by browning stew meat with diced onion and garlic in olive oil. Carrots, tomato juice, bay leaves, and thyme are added to create a simmering stew, cooking covered for one to two hours until the meat is very tender. Frozen peas are stirred in at the end for a touch of sweetness and color. Seasoning with salt and black pepper is adjusted to taste.

Mashed potatoes accompany the steak, made by boiling peeled potato chunks until tender, then mashing them with salted butter, cream cheese, milk, salt, and pepper into a creamy side. The creamy, smooth mash contrasts with the saucy, textured meat.

Serving the steak over mashed potatoes makes it a filling meal suitable for lunch or dinner. This meal provides both protein and comfort through its hearty ingredients and slow-cooked tenderness.
