Taco Pizza

This Taco Pizza features a layered crust topped with refried beans mixed with salsa, seasoned ground beef, cheddar or Mexican blend cheese, and sliced olives. After baking, fresh tomatoes, green onions, and optional sour cream and taco sauce add brightness and a creamy finish. The crust can be customized for thickness by selecting the dough weight and pan size.

Description

Taco Pizza begins with resting pizza dough, then par-baking it to establish a crisp base. A spread of refried beans and salsa acts as a flavorful sauce substitute, topped with seasoned ground beef and melted cheese. Olives add a briny contrast, while diced tomatoes and green onions provide fresh, crunchy toppings after baking. The optional sour cream and taco sauce add creamy tang and extra seasoning.

The pizza is versatile in crust thickness depending on dough weight and pan size, allowing for personal texture preference. It can be served as a casual meal or party dish where guests may top their slices with sour cream and taco sauce.

Store-bought or bakery-prepared dough works well; a 12-inch pan yields thicker crust, while larger pans produce thinner bases. Adjust bean and salsa amounts according to pan size to avoid overwhelming the crust.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 (12-16 ounce) pizza dough (depending on if you want thick or thin crust)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 (1 ounce) taco seasoning packet
  • 1 (15 ounce) refried beans canned
  • 1/4 /4 cup salsa
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese or Mexican blend cheese, shredded
  • olives about 1/4 cup, sliced
  • Toppings: tomato diced, sliced
  • Toppings: green onion
  • Toppings: sour cream
  • Toppings: taco sauce

Instructions

  1. Let pizza dough rest at room temperature for about 20 minutes.
  2. While dough is resting, brown beef in a large skillet. Add the taco seasoning, add water called for on the package, and cook according to the package instructions. Set aside.
  3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Press the or roll the dough onto a 12-inch pizza pan, pizza stone, or larger pan (see note). Bake for 8 minutes. Remove from oven.
  4. In a small bowl, stir together the refried beans and salsa. Spread a thin layer onto the pizza crust. If you are using a 12-inch pan you might not need all of it. If you're using a larger pizza pan or a 9x13 pan you will use all of it.
  5. Sprinkle with the ground beef mixture, cheese, and olives. Bake for about 5 minutes or until cheese is completely melted. Remove from the oven and top with tomatoes and green onions. You can add a dollop of sour cream to the center or let everyone top their own. Add taco sauce if desired.

Notes

  • Pizza dough can be homemade or purchased; bakery dough often weighs between 12-16 ounces.
  • Use a 12-inch pan for thick crust and larger pans for thinner crust depending on preference.
  • Adjust the refried bean and salsa layer according to pan size to prevent sogginess.
