Tater Tot Shepherd's Pie

Tater Tot Shepherd's Pie layers ground beef and onion cooked with seasoning and Worcestershire sauce, topped with steamed vegetables and crispy baked tater tots. A generous finish of melted cheddar cheese adds richness. This casserole combines savory meat, tender veggies, and crunchy potato tots, providing a hearty and textural main dish popular as a family dinner or potluck item.

Description

Tater Tot Shepherd's Pie begins by browning lean ground beef with chopped onions, creating a flavorful base. A seasoning mix and Worcestershire sauce enhance the meat with savory notes and a thickened sauce. The savory meat layer is spread in a casserole dish, topped by an even layer of mixed vegetables including peas, corn, and carrots that are steamed and drained. A layer of frozen tater tots covers the vegetables, adding crispness after baking.

The assembled dish is baked at 375°F until the tater tots are golden and crispy, usually about 25-30 minutes. Then shredded cheddar cheese is sprinkled on top and melted thoroughly under the oven’s heat. This combination brings together a tender and flavorful filling with textural contrast from the crispy potato topping and melted cheese. It serves as a comforting all-in-one meal suitable for families and gatherings.

Nutritional values vary depending on the seasoning mix and ingredient brands used, so customization is possible to adjust fat and calorie content. Removing excess grease from the ground beef is recommended to reduce greasiness. This recipe yields a generous portion suitable for multiple servings.

  • 1 pound ground beef lean
  • 1 cup onion white, chopped
  • 3 cups peas steamed until warm then drained, frozen, mix
  • 3 cups corn
  • 3 cups carrots
  • 1 Shepherd's pie seasoning mix
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Grease a 9x13 casserole dish and set aside.
  3. Fry the ground beef and onion together until the beef is browned and no longer pink inside. Drain the grease (and rinse the beef if wanted to remove extra grease).
  4. Combine the seasoning mix with the amount of water listed on the package in the frying pan, add the Worcestershire sauce and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Transfer the meat mixture to the 9x13 pan and spread out evenly on the bottom.
  6. Place the vegetables on top of the meat in an even layer.
  7. Take the tater tots and spread the entire bag out in an even layer on top of the vegetables.
  8. Cook in the oven for 25-30 minutes, until the tater tots are crispy brown and well cooked. (time may vary) Once the tater tots are cooked, sprinkle the cheese on top evenly and cook until the cheese is melted on top.
  9. Remove from the oven, serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Drain excess grease from the cooked ground beef for a less greasy pie; rinse if desired.
