Teriyaki Meatballs
Description
This recipe begins by baking frozen meatballs until fully cooked. Meanwhile, a teriyaki sauce is prepared by simmering soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic and ginger, honey, and toasted sesame oil. Cornstarch slurry is added to thicken the sauce to a shiny glaze. Once the meatballs are baked, they are tossed in the warm sauce until fully coated.
The finishing touch of sesame seeds and sliced green onions adds a mild crunch and fresh note. The meatballs absorb the sweet and savory flavors of the sauce while maintaining their tender interior.
This dish works well served alone as a snack or over rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables for a fuller meal.
Ingredients
- 18 ounces meatballs frozen
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons green onion sliced
For the sauce:
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons garlic minced
- 2 teaspoons ginger minced
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil toasted
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
Instructions
- Bake the meatballs according to package directions.
- While the meatballs are in the oven, prepare the sauce.
- Place the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey and sesame oil in a small pot over medium high heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Turn up heat to high and bring to a boil.
- Mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water until dissolved. Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce and boil for 1-2 minutes or until sauce has thickened.
- Remove the meatballs from the oven. Pour the sauce over the meatballs and toss to coat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions and serve.
Notes
- For homemade meatballs, mix 1 pound ground beef with egg, breadcrumbs, minced onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder, shape into 1-inch balls, then broil for 8 to 10 minutes until browned.
- The teriyaki sauce can be made up to three days in advance and stored refrigerated.
