Teriyaki Meatballs

Teriyaki Meatballs combine oven-baked meatballs coated in a homemade teriyaki sauce made from soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey, and toasted sesame oil. The sauce thickens to coat the meatballs with a glossy, savory-sweet glaze accented by sesame seeds and green onions, offering a balance of hearty texture and rich flavor suitable for appetizers or mains.

Description

This recipe begins by baking frozen meatballs until fully cooked. Meanwhile, a teriyaki sauce is prepared by simmering soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic and ginger, honey, and toasted sesame oil. Cornstarch slurry is added to thicken the sauce to a shiny glaze. Once the meatballs are baked, they are tossed in the warm sauce until fully coated.

The finishing touch of sesame seeds and sliced green onions adds a mild crunch and fresh note. The meatballs absorb the sweet and savory flavors of the sauce while maintaining their tender interior.

This dish works well served alone as a snack or over rice, noodles, or steamed vegetables for a fuller meal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 18 ounces meatballs frozen
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons green onion sliced

For the sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoons ginger minced
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil toasted
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Bake the meatballs according to package directions.
  2. While the meatballs are in the oven, prepare the sauce.
  3. Place the soy sauce, water, brown sugar, garlic, ginger, honey and sesame oil in a small pot over medium high heat. Stir until sugar is dissolved, about 3 minutes. Turn up heat to high and bring to a boil.
  4. Mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water until dissolved. Add the cornstarch mixture to the sauce and boil for 1-2 minutes or until sauce has thickened.
  5. Remove the meatballs from the oven. Pour the sauce over the meatballs and toss to coat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and green onions and serve.

Notes

  • For homemade meatballs, mix 1 pound ground beef with egg, breadcrumbs, minced onion, salt, pepper, and garlic powder, shape into 1-inch balls, then broil for 8 to 10 minutes until browned.
  • The teriyaki sauce can be made up to three days in advance and stored refrigerated.
