The Best Blackened Tilapia Recipe

Report
The Best Blackened Tilapia Recipe features tilapia filets coated with a homemade blackening seasoning and cooked in a hot cast iron skillet to form a spicy, crispy crust. The generous sear develops a flavorful exterior while preserving the fish's tender, flaky interior. The method uses vegetable oil for cooking and seasoning application, resulting in a distinctive, well-seasoned crust without overpowering the mild tilapia taste, suitable for a main dish served warm.

Description

The Best Blackened Tilapia Recipe centers on fresh tilapia filets rubbed with a blend of vegetable oil and a homemade blackening seasoning that brings both spice and color. Cooking briefly on each side in a high-heat cast iron skillet allows the seasoning to create a dark, flavorful crust characteristic of blackened fish, while keeping the flesh flaky and moist. The controlled cooking time ensures the fish reaches a safe internal temperature without drying out.

The dish is best served warm after resting a few minutes to let juices redistribute. It can be a straightforward main course paired with sides like steamed vegetables or rice, offering a slightly spicy yet balanced seafood option.

Leftover blackened tilapia stores well in an airtight container refrigerated up to four days, allowing convenient reheating for later meals.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 tilapia filets
  • 2 Tbsp blackening seasoning
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Place the tilapia on a plate. Rub 1 tablespoon of the vegetable oil onto both sides of the tilapia filets.
  2. Spoon the homemade blackened seasoning over the fish and spread around (both sides). I use about ½ tablespoon per fish. You can adjust the seasoning amount based on your preference. The more you use, the spicier it will be and the less you use, the milder it will be.
  3. Heat the remaining vegetable oil over high heat in a cast iron skillet.
  4. Place tilapia on the hot cast iron pan and let it cook for 3 minutes. Time it and don't move the fish, so it can get that beautiful blackened crust on it.
  5. Flip and cook another 2-3 minutes until the tilapia has an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees F.
  6. Remove to a separate plate and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days to maintain freshness.
