The Best Swedish Meatballs and Gravy
Description
This recipe combines ground beef and pork with breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, egg, and traditional Swedish spices: allspice and nutmeg, seasoned with salt and black pepper. The mixture is shaped into small, evenly sized meatballs, then gently pan-fried in olive oil without crowding the pan to achieve an even, browned exterior and fully cooked interior.
The gravy is made in the same skillet by forming a butter and flour roux with added nutmeg and allspice, slowly thickened with beef broth and flavored optionally with Worcestershire sauce. Sour cream is stirred in last to create a creamy, tangy sauce that complements the spices in the meatballs. The meatballs return to the skillet to warm through and absorb gravy flavors.
This dish is traditionally served hot atop cooked egg noodles or creamy mashed potatoes, making it a filling meal. Fresh parsley garnish adds a touch of color and freshness. The blend of warm spices pairs well with the hearty meat and rich, smooth gravy for classic Swedish comfort food.
An alternative cooking method for the meatballs is baking them in a 400-degree oven on a greased sheet for about 30 minutes, providing a hands-off option and slightly different texture. This flexibility allows adaptation based on available cooking equipment or preference.

- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- 4 cups beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (optional)
- 2/3 cup sour cream
- 1/4 teaspoon salt , or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper , or to taste
For Serving
- 1 pound egg noodles cooked, or mashed potatoes
- 1 tablespoon parsley for garnish (optional, chopped, fresh
Instructions
- In a medium-size mixing bowl, stir together ground beef, ground pork, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce, egg, 1/2 tsp allspice, 1/2 tsp nutmeg, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/2 tsp pepper. Form into 1-inch meatballs.
- Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Working in batches, fry the meatballs in the oil until browned on all sides and cooked through. Be sure not to crowd the pan. Remove cooked meatballs from pan and set aside, draining any excess grease.
- Make the gravy by melting butter in the same skillet used to cook the meatballs. Once butter is melted, stir in flour, nutmeg, and allspice until it forms a paste.
- Slowly pour in beef broth and 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (if using for added flavor) and heat over medium-high heat until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in sour cream until combined.
- Return cooked meatballs to skillet and stir with gravy to coat. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or cooked egg noodles. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Notes
- Meatballs can be baked in a 400°F oven for about 30 minutes for an alternative to pan-frying.
